The Self
“Jungian psychology is more than ‘just’ broadening our sense of self, by consciously acknowledging our repressed and unused traits and skills. Essential to Jungian psychology is the connection to the guiding force in our psyche. In old traditions this force is referred to as the genius, the daimon or guardian angel. Jung called this the Self. When we live a life connected to this force, we experience a sense of meaning. It feels as if we are answering our calling and living a purposeful life.”

In the realm of Depth psychology, the concepts of the ego and the Self play pivotal roles in understanding the human experience. These terms are integral to Depth Psychology, and they offer valuable insights into our inner world and personal growth. The ego represents the conscious self – the part of our psyche that we readily identify with. It encompasses our day-to-day thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, as well as our sense of identity. Think of the ego as the "I" that you recognize as yourself in your everyday life. It serves as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious aspects of the mind and is influenced by cultural norms and societal expectations.
Conversely, the Self, represents the deepest essence of ourselves. It goes beyond the ego's conscious identity and touches upon the most profound and authentic aspects of our being. The Self is often associated with our inner wisdom, intuition, and the transcendent dimension of our existence.
The journey to personal growth and spiritual realization involves reconnecting with the Self, often through the process of individuation. This entails exploring the unconscious depths of the psyche, integrating the shadow (unconscious aspects of the self), and connecting with archetypal patterns that reveal our true nature.
Exploring the Self involves delving into the innermost layers of the psyche, working with day and night dreams, symbols, mythological themes, and nurturing a deeper understanding of our core self. This process can lead to a profound sense of purpose, meaning, and a deeper connection to the spiritual dimension of life.
