Calling - Acorn Theory
“Jungian psychology is more than ‘just’ broadening our sense of self, by consciously acknowledging our repressed and unused traits and skills. Essential to Jungian psychology is the connection to the guiding force in our psyche. In old traditions this force is referred to as the genius, the daimon or guardian angel. Jung called this the Self. When we live a life connected to this force, we experience a sense of meaning. It feels as if we are answering our calling and living a purposeful life.”

James Hillman's Acorn Theory is a profound psychological concept suggesting that each person is born with a unique blueprint or destiny, akin to an acorn containing the potential to become a specific oak tree. Hillman argues that this "acorn," or innate potential, is present from birth and influences the direction of an individual's life, guiding their interests, talents, and passions.
The Acorn Theory is deeply influenced by Plato's philosophical ideas, particularly the notion of the soul's innate knowledge and destiny as described in the Myth of Er. Hillman suggests that each person is born with a unique blueprint or "acorn," which contains the potential for their true self and destiny. This concept parallels Plato's idea that the soul chooses its path before birth and reflects Aristotle’s entelechy, the belief that every being has an inherent purpose to fulfill. Hillman’s theory also draws from Carl Jung’s notions of individuation and the collective unconscious, emphasizing the importance of personal development and realizing one's potential.
According to Hillman, traditional psychology often overlooks this intrinsic aspect of the human psyche, focusing instead on environmental and developmental factors. He emphasizes that understanding and embracing one's acorn can lead to a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment. The theory suggests that life’s challenges and experiences are not random but serve to shape and reveal one's true calling.
This perspective encourages individuals to look beyond societal expectations and external pressures to discover their authentic selves. By paying attention to recurring themes, passions, and dreams in their lives, people can gain insights into their acorn and align their actions with their true nature. This approach fosters a more meaningful and enriched life, as individuals are guided by their inherent potential and destiny.
